High School Dance Themes From the Future

Forget “Bright Lights, Big City” or “Magical Memories” these bad-alliterations turned go-to Sweetheart dance themes are outdated and overdone.  Plan a dance that will be truly memorable by going Sci-Fi.

Nothing is more romantic than the future. The allure of time-travel, teleportation and warp speed transportation opens up so many possibilities for romantic dates amongst the stars! Or is that just me?  Since none of those things exist yet, us 21st century daydreamers can experience the next best thing—a night of dancing with friends with futuristic décor to remind us how Sci-fi isn’t just for nerds anymore!

Through Time and Space

What’s more romantic than all of time and space? Run, and dance with The Doctor in a Doctor Who high school dance theme that can take on literally any point in time and space.

DIY-decoration must-haves: a TARDIS (the big blue police box!), a Dalek replica, Weeping Angel statues, a prop-sized cube like those seen in Season 7’s “The Power of Three” episode

Party favors: a pen (blue or green, to match the Doctor’s Sonic Screwdriver), a Fez (Fezes are cool), or keepsake TARDIS boxes

Picture this as your picture backdrop:  a starry blue swirling time-vortex with an archway made to look like open TARDIS doors, or beautiful scenery under a different sky with large planets and a different sun.

Wanna get really into it? Gals: Channel River Song, Rose Tyler, Amy Pond or any of the other companions as you pick out your dress; Guys: A blue or brown suit, chuck tailors and a bow-tie will do just nicely.

Across the Stars

Whether you’re looking for love in Alderaan places or you haven’t found the droid you’re looking for maybe you’ll find what it all in a Star Wars dance theme.

DIY decoration must-haves:  Winter wonderland Ewok snowflakes (like those offered from Designer Anthony Herrera), Storm Trooper cut-outs, and a light-saber archway

Party favors: purple neon sunglasses (just like Samuel L. Jacksons’ signature purple lightsaber), or a keyring (for keys to the X-34 landspeeder)

Picture this as your picture backdrop:  a futuristic concept of a place, like Alderran, with striking juxtaposition of nature and an advanced city, or create a winter-wonderland feel with a background inspired by Hoth, the white world full of ice caves and stunningly simplistic beauty.

Wanna get really into it? As a couple, get inspired by Hans-solo and Princess Leah, wear a beautiful white gown, paired with a guy in rugged brown boots and a brown sweater vest.

You can even make it a competition with friends from school! Give out awards for the biggest, funniest, and most unique snowmen that are built. When the fun is done, head inside for some hot chocolate to warm you up.

5 Unique Things to do in the Snow

Winter is here, which means the weather is quickly changing. If you’re lucky, there will most likely be snowfall if there wasn’t already.  So when the snow storm keeps you snowed in, here are some unique, playful ways to spend your snow days:

1.Ice cube hunt
Who says you have to wait until Easter for an “Easter Egg Hunt”?!  An Ice cube hunt is just as fun!  Here is how you do it:  While making the ice cubes, put food coloring in to make them different colors.  Hide them in a designated area throughout the snow.  First person to find the most ice cubes wins!

2. Make Snow Ice Cream
It’s fun to eat snow- but even more fun to eat snow ice cream!
Recipe: 1 cup milk
1 egg, well beaten
3/4 cup sugar
1/4 tsp. salt
clean snow
Beat egg; add milk, sugar and salt. Mix together well. Add enough snow to make it thick.

3. Build a Bomb Shelter
Why build an igloo, when you can build a bomb shelter!  Go all out, make sure it’s sturdy enough to outlast a war of snow bombs.  Make it look cool by adding a snow couch and store the necessary food and beverages in your very own handmade snow refrigerator.

4. Collect Snowflakes
Snowflakes are so pretty!  Here is a way you can look at all of the pretty snowflakes without fear of them melting in your hand:
Materials:
Microscope slide or small piece of thin Plexiglas
Plastic container
Spray can of clear lacquer
Magnifying glass
Directions:
Cool down the slide, container and lacquer so snowflakes won’t melt when landing on the slide. Spray thin coat of lacquer on slide and tilt so any extra spray runs off. Make sure the lacquer sets for a few minutes. Catch a bunch of snowflakes on slide and then put them back into container and cover them with a lid. Leave the slide outside to harden for about three to four hours. View the beautiful snowflakes with a magnifying glass.

5.  Snow Decorating
Fill up spray bottles of water and food coloring, go outside and start decorating your snow!  The neighbors will be so jealous of your artistic yard filled with colorful snow.
