Prom Shopping 2013

Prom shopping has finally started and this year is a lot more formal and more colorful than last year's dresses. There is a lot more orange and reds this year. Peplum dresses have become a huge in-style dress thanks to the many award shows this year.

Lace prom dresses have also been very popular buy this year to give girls a more vintage feel.

There are so many options for prom dresses in 2013 you can check these websites for prices and some dress ideas that you may want to look for in stores.

Budgeting is also a BIG thing when it comes to prom. Ways that you can save money:
  1.  If you know a friend that can do make-up and/or hair that can easily save you $150 dollars.
  2. Team up with a limo or party bus, it's cheaper to get a party bus and you don't have to worry     about prom after party.
  3. Some of your peers may have a niche in photography, ask them to take your picture instead of hiring a professional photographer to do your shoot.

Mid-Winter Recess

Senior trip is probably something of the past now, but who says you can't still have fun during your mid-winter recess.

Scholarships-  Get started, or finished up on scholarship applications for college. Top 5 websites for scholarships are:
1.     Scholarships
2.     Cappex
3.     Zinch
4.     Fast Web

Ice-skating – Gather up your friends and go ice-skating. Ice-skating is described as a “winter” sport but you can honestly do it all year round in arenas. Ice-skating is a lot of fun and it also burns 250 calories per hour, for those of you who are trying to burn some calories here and there.

Volunteer- You can take the time out to volunteer at a shelter, it will help with your community service hours for those of you who may need some service hours to graduate. There are many shelters that look for volunteers this time of the year.

Zoo, Aquarium or Museum? – Take the time to explore one of these places, the zoo, aquarium and museums always have
student discounts and it could possibly be free, you can learn a lot of new things from visiting a museum and have pictures of cute and creepy animals from the zoo and aquarium.

Movie Night – Host a movie night, senior trip has probably occurred already and there is not much time left. Hosting a movie night gives you more time to spend in the company of your best friends who may be going away for college.

Black History Month

Every year there is always a project that needs to be submitted for black history month but you may not know who to choose. Some students may be tired of doing the same people, or having someone in class that did the same research as you so here a few people that you cobuld possibly do your project on.

Daisy Bates: She was a civil rights leader who helped desegregate Arkansas’ Central High School in Little Rock.

Alvin Ailey: American modern dancer and choreographer, known for his style and his choreography were based on multiracial cultures.

George Carruthers: Earned his Ph.D. in aeronautical engineering. He built telescopes as a child and as he became an adult NASA used his inventions to explore space and the Earth’s atmosphere.

Garrett Morgan:  Girls should be grateful for Mr. Morgan, he improved the sewing machine, traffic signal, a hair straightening product, and a respiratory device.

Hank Aaron: one of the best baseball players of all time. He scored 755 home runs.

Black History Month started around 1926 in the United States when Carter G. Woodson declared the second week of February to be “Negro History Week”.  This week was chosen because it marked the birthday of both Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass.

DIY Valentine's Day Gifts

Valentine’s day is coming up and you probably don’t have a clue of what to get your Valentine. Everybody is always on a budget so what better gift to give than a gift that you took time to make to show that you appreciate that person.

Top 5 DIY Gifts

1.     Scrapbook - You can put together a scrapbook of pictures and poems that remind you of that person, who doesn’t like a book filled with memories that you can always keep.
2
.     Cookies -  Heart shaped cookies are definitely at the top of the list of gifts for me. You can go as far as putting them into a jar and decorating the jar so that it is unique.

3.     Felt Fortune Cookies - all you need is some felt material that you can get at the craft store, hot glue and strips of paper. You cut the felt into little circles, write a note on the strip of paper, tuck the note in the middle of the felt, glue the edges and then fold the felt over so that it looks like a little fortune cookie. You can even get more creative and add little chocolate minis in there. (as seen on Style Caster)

4.     Chocolate Covered Strawberries – I know chocolate covered strawberries are the most expensive at this time of the year. It saves so much money when you do it yourself. The easy way to do this is to go to the supermarket buy microwavable dipping chocolate and strawberries. Microwave the dipping chocolate for 30 seconds, stir, dip the strawberries in it and place them on wax paper. This saves a lot of time and money.

5.     Candy Jar - You can fill up a jam jar with your favorite Valentine’s candy (m&m, kisses, skittles) and you can put a letter in it and decorate the jar.
